Check-in was a snap - and we were quickly walked over to our "room." The Summer Kitchen is actually a two story cottage that is next to the main Inn. When we entered the Inn - we were met by the Innkeeper's dog - who gave us a couple of welcome barks and then retreated - with the Innkeeper popping out of the kitchen, where she was helping to prepare dinner for the Inn's restaurant that evening. My wife and I stayed at the Inn for two nights in February, and had the Summer Kitchen. Personal highlights for me were the Yellow Billed Cuckoo, the White Breasted Nuthatch and the Pileated Woodpecker! We would love to return and see more of the area. The 80 acres around the house were a pleasure to walk slowly around (given the heat and humidity) while birding. We dined in the dining room on our second evening and again, had a very enjoyable and tasty meal. Our breakfasts on both days were delicious and filling and set us up very well. Being birders we enjoyed the birds that flittered in and out of the bushes in front of us while we ate, especially the Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. The food was superb in every respect (kudos to Suzanne and Suzie) as was the very quaffable local Cabernet Blanc that accompanied it. Some hours after our arrival we took delivery of a picnic dinner we'd previously ordered and ate it with relish on the veranda outside our room. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable and we slept very soundly while staying in it. Given how tired we were at the start of our holiday our stay there was the perfect beginning to our trip. Mrs JMDB and I began our recent holiday in the US by staying two nights in the Lightfoot Room at the Meander Planation. Use your imagination and you can almost see Thomas Jefferson meandering the grounds. The food is outstanding, the landscape & vistas are beautiful. Appears this historic gem could use better maintenance - we never did meet or see the owners, disappointed as this is a reason we like B & B's. Bare wires on the service line were within reach of the porch. Evening meal served in another basket which we took to the 2nd floor porch- had to clean off the dirty furniture we notice porch floor uneven & railings were scary. We were given our picnic basket (part of a package) which was delish. Again, my partner notices the crystal facing us needs to be washed and cabinet doors were falling off. A comfortable bed and a quiet night's rest, breakfast at 9:00, with several choices ea morning all were delicious, Waitress very helpful & friendly. Ok there needs to be a little more housekeeping, I'm still happy. Not so my partner who proceeded to find little things wrong - dirty windows, a musty odor and sticking doors. So far I'm taken with the colonial décor and feel of the inn. Very large room with a sitting room and large bath. We were greeted by Courtney who promptly gave us our Montpelier tour tickets and showed us to our om the main hall weaving through the dining room, up a flight of stairs to the Colonel Frey room. "Meandering" up the long driveway with gorgeous grounds all around us, first impression was great. If I was not traveling with a home remodeling contractor, I might have overlooked the troubles this lovely old home has. Appears this historic gem could use better maintenance - we.
